The Sanders House is Now Open to Residents

Tucked beneath the oaks at Point Hope, one of the oldest structures on the Cainhoy Peninsula has been completely refurbished and is now open to Point Hope property owners for gatherings and private events. Built around 1860 on property where the Hopewell neighborhood is now located, the home sits on land shaped by centuries of history.
Over time, the house remained remarkably intact. It was occupied through the late 20th century, but after sitting vacant for years, it began to deteriorate. Still, its original form - a classic I-house with four main rooms, simple symmetry and a raised foundation - remained. Rather than replace it, the decision was made to restore and repurpose it as a community amenity.
The goal was simple: preserve what made the house special while creating a space that would serve the needs of the Point Hope community today. The original layout was preserved, structural elements were stabilized and historic materials were carefully repaired and replicated. Even small details, like the natural slope of the floors and original framing joints, were intentionally preserved. Meanwhile, modern updates like restrooms, a catering kitchen and improved structural support were thoughtfully added to make the space functional without changing its character.
Today, the Sanders House has a new purpose as a community gathering space. It’s a place where neighbors come together, much like it has been for generations - only now, its story continues as part of Point Hope’s future.
