A Residents’ Guide to the 2026 Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and will continue through November 30. While forecasters are predicting a relatively mild season, now is the time to prepare for severe weather and ensure your household is ready should a storm approach the Lowcountry.

A few years ago, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) updated the state’s hurricane evacuation zones. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new zones and review evacuation routes before an emergency occurs. Understanding where Point Hope is within the evacuation system can help you make informed decisions if an evacuation order is issued.

To get started, review SCEMD’s Hurricane Guide, which provides helpful information on storm tracking, watches and warnings, emergency kits and family preparedness plans. Berkeley County also offers an updated Emergency Management Guide with details about the new evacuation zones and local emergency procedures.

The American Red Cross website includes a section on Disaster Relief and Recovery, a Hurricane Safety Checklist, and many other tools and resources to help you before, during and after an emergency.

Residents are advised to keep a well-stocked emergency kit handy that includes non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, important documents and supplies for pets. Taking time now to prepare can help reduce stress and improve safety during a storm event.

In the event of a potential storm, the Point Hope POA will communicate important updates and community information via email. These communications may include preparedness reminders, operational updates and information shared by local and state emergency officials. Following a storm, residents may report community-related damage or concerns by emailing poa@pointhopecharleston.com

Preparation is one of the most effective tools we have during hurricane season. We encourage all residents to stay informed, stay aware and make a plan before severe weather arrives.
