Summertime Landscaping Tips for Point Hope Homeowners

Maintaining a beautiful and functional landscape during the hottest Lowcountry months requires some care and planning. Whether you’re new to the community, new to Charleston or a seasoned Lowcountry resident, the following practical summer landscaping tips and reminders can help you keep your yard looking its best:

  • Water Smarter

    • With summer temperatures climbing and humidity levels soaring, it’s tempting to overwater during the summer months. However, slow, deep and infrequent watering is best for building strong root systems. Early in the morning is the most efficient time to irrigate because it minimizes the evaporation rate and reduces the risk of fungal growth. Consider installing a smart irrigation system or using rain sensors to avoid overwatering after summer storms.

  • Choose Native and Drought-Tolerant Plants

    • Point Hope’s coastal climate is ideal for a variety of native plants that are naturally adapted to our soil type and weather conditions. Native plants such as Sweetgrass, Yaupon Holly and Beautyberry not only require less water and maintenance, but they also support local wildlife like birds and pollinators.

  • Prune Carefully

    • Summer is not the time for heavy pruning. Instead, light shaping of overgrown shrubs or removal of dead or diseased branches is beneficial. Avoid cutting back spring-blooming plants, as you may be trimming away next year’s blooms.

  • Mow Mindfully

    • Adjust your mower blade higher during the summer. Taller grass shades the soil, helping retain moisture and discouraging weeds. For most warm-season grasses common in Point Hope, such as St. Augustine or Zoysia, a height of about 3-4 inches is ideal.
